Margin vs markup
| Cost | Price | Profit | Margin | Markup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $40 | $65 | $25 | 38.46% | 62.5% |
| $60 | $80 | $20 | 25% | 33.33% |
| $50 | $100 | $50 | 50% | 100% |
Margin can never reach 100%, but markup can go as high as you like. When someone quotes a "50% margin", make sure they don't mean a 50% markup, which is only a 33.33% margin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate profit margin?
Profit margin = (Price − Cost) ÷ Price × 100. For a $40 item sold at $65: $25 ÷ $65 = 38.46%.
What's the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. The same $25 profit on a $40 item is a 38.46% margin but a 62.5% markup.
How do I find the price for a target margin?
Price = Cost ÷ (1 − margin). For a 25% margin on a $60 cost, $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80. In Calc Pro, enter the Cost and Profit, tap Price and press Calc.
